extraction

An extraction is when a hopeless or non-treatable tooth is removed. Extractions will relieve tooth pain and get rid of infection in the mouth.

Teeth removal results in an open space and missing dentition.

Replacement should always be considered unless it is a wisdom tooth or in some cases an extra tooth.

Other reasons tooth extractions are needed for  orthodontic correction, when baby teeth don't fall out on their own, or when there are problems with a wisdom tooth.  Infection and decay affecting the tooth or surrounding teeth is the main reason extractions are needed.
